high-purr-BOO-lee-uh, high-purr-BYOO-lee-uh (from Greek hyper, excessive or high, and boulia, decisiveness)

Hyperboulia refers to an excess of will or initiative--think of your favorite overachiever with the schedule book filled with appointments, multiply by 100, and you've got a hyperboulic. Typical hyperboulics want everything, right now, and want to have it in their own way; while they make plenty of plans, however, they don't always finish them. Hyperboulia often appears during the manic stage of bipolar disorder, and may also show up in some patients with frontal-lobe damage. The term is somewhat archaic; patients with this symptom are more frequently described as erethic, frontal (inaccurately), or just plain hyperactive.
