The practice of
Huskanoy, a term borrowed from
Virginia Native Americans, involved
subjecting an
initiate to
tribal ceremonies that included severe
physical ordeals and rigorous
colonic irrigations. In 1788,
Thomas Jefferson wrote of someone who looked "so much out of his element that he has the air of someone huskanoyed."
