A file can have several attributes set to indicate the usage and security of that file.

  • READ ONLY
You can only read the file. It cannot be modified or deleted without warning.

  • COMPRESSED
Indicates that the file is compressed to save disk space.

  • ARCHIVE
If this flag is set, the next hard drive archival pass will include the file because it is either new or changed.

  • HIDDEN
This attribute indicates that the file will normally be hidden from view from desktop file browsers. This attribute removes the files from the browser window to ease clutter and prevent accidental changes or deletions.

  • SYSTEM
This attribute indicates that the file is part of the operating system or machine (drivers, etc). Normally these are also hidden from view.
