Explicit collaborative filtering is a process in which the users of a system must explicitly rate aspects of content. These ratings and then averaged together or weighted according user reputability and then summed. The results are then displayed to all the individuals inquiring about the piece of content in question.

The ability to rate and review books on many of the popular online book retailers is an example of explicit collaborative filtering.
