Abbreviated and
gender indeterminate form of
et alia. Also: et alii (masculine), et aliae (feminine), et alibi (and elsewhere).
Standard usage: as with et cetera, but with people instead of objects: to replace a list of people, naming only the primary individual(s) in a list, such as:
- Legal Documents
- EFF v. RIAA, SDMI, Verance Corporation, et al.
- Author or Lawyer Listings.
- The Thieves' World series, by Robert Asprin et al.
