The common name of a rather large locust that lives in temperate to hot climates in the southern United States.

Insecta Pterygota, Orthoptera: a matte black locust of about 6 inches in length overall, having very striking markings over the wings and under the belly that begin in the deep blood red and gradually melt to bright sun yellow.

Devilhorses love to eat up flowers and when they appear they arrive en-mass. They can swim. They don't move very quickly and they are fairly safe as I have never known one to bite.

I used to see them in Louisiana where I grew up.
