Cucumbers normally have seeds, which can contribute to gastric distress. A burpless variety one that has been bred to have less and smaller seeds, and a lower acidity. These factors result in fewer burps.
It should be noted that when pickled, a burpless cucumber will not retain its crispness, and thus should not be pickled as spears, but rather whole or as slices.
