It's a car it's a boat.. it's... AMPHICAR!
That was the slogan for the only mass-produced amphibious passenger automobile, built in Germany from 1961 to 1968. About 3,700 were manufactured, with sales dwindling due to export laws in the States (where, surprise surprise, the majority of buyers were).
The specs: The Amphicar was rear engine and used a 4 cylinder Triumph Herald motor producing 43hp. All Amphicars were convertibles and equipped with a 4 speed transmission. The vehicles only came in 4 colors, White (Ivory/Cream), Red, Lagoon Blue and Fjord Green (Aqua). The Amphicar had a top speed on water of 7mph and on land 70mph. The special transmission built by Hermes (makers of the Porsche transmission) allowed the wheels and propellers to operate independently or simultaneously. The Amphicar could also reverse when in the water with the front wheels acting as rudders. The Amphicar sold new for $2,800 to $3,000.
