The word allopatric itself comes from the
Greek word
patra meaning "
fatherland".
Allopatric speciation is the occurance of a new species caused by an existing species being split into two or more smaller populations due to a
geographic barrier, preventing the
interbreeding between the resulting populations.
This
phenomenon is presumed to have been the cause of why many species of
organisms evolved.
