A project started by the National Center for Atmospheric Research,
the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and the National Center for
Supercomputing Applications with the goal to deliver speeds greater
than the (current average of) 10 MB/s for broadband users.
Web100 has found that the problem lies into the 'host system software
(principally TCP) that is optimized for low bandwidth environments
and the lack of effective instrumentation and tools to diagnose performance
issues at the end hosts'.
Web100 is promising to create software that deals with the speed problems
by refining the
TCP software, initially under
Linux.
Currently 21 researchers at Stanfords and Berkely are testing software (released
March 21, 2001) from the Web100 project.
