Valdas Adamkus was born "Valdas Adamkevicius" in Lithuania. He came to the USA after World War II to avoid Soviet rule. When he got to the USA, he got a job with the EPA in Chicago. After Lithuania gained independence from Russia, he returned to Lithuania, where he was elected president in 1996. He always gets a warm welcome from Lithuanian-Americans on Chicago's South Side when he visits America.
