An acronym: Vertical Takeoff Horizontal Landing

This ones very rare. The only vehicle I know that does this is the Space Shuttle. Most normal vehicles are HTHL or VTVL.

The disadvantage of this technique is that the vehicle needs to be propped up between landing and taking off again. In the case of the Space Shuttle they do this operation in the Vehicle Assembly building whilst preparing it for launch.
