This is not some fairy tale out of one of those books in the corner, but something that actually happened.

Princess Elizabeth of Great Britain was touring Kenya, then still a British Colony, in early 1952. On the 6th of February she stopped overnight at a resort hotel built in a treetop, with access up a 30 foot ladder and views over a waterhole where elephants and leopards might appear. That evening back in London her father George VI, died, with the news not arriving until the next day, when she had already left and returned to a resort. Her husband Prince Phillip told her the news on a stroll through the resorts garden, and she returned home, accepting the crown. She became Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and is now the currently longest serving monarch in the world.
