A region of
Middle Europe now located along the
border between
Czech Republic and
Poland. Greeny landscape with small hills and little
towns. Quintessentially
European.
This region used to be part of
Bohemia, and was largely
German-speaking. This was just fine, and things remained so for centuries. But in the mid-30's, the rise of the
Nazi regime led to growing
pangermanism among german-speaking people all over
Europe. The Sudetes question became one of Europe's itching point, and was the main subject of the
Munich Pact - which led to the annexion of the region by
Germany.
In 1945, the lost districts were recovered by
Czechoslovakia and most of the German population was expelled.
