Pul*som"e*ter (?), n. [Pulse + -meter.]

A device, with valves, for raising water by steam, partly by atmospheric pressure, and partly by the direct action of the steam on the water, without the intervention of a piston; -- also called vacuum pump.

<-- sounds like a steam aspirator, perhaps with other attachments. No figure. "vacuum pump" is usu. reserved for a mechanical device to create a vacuum, nothing to do with raising water. -->

A pulsimeter.
