Slightly insulting term for someone who grew up in what was then East Germany (Ostdeutschland in German). Not as insulting today as it was 10 years ago when it implied naiveté and inexperience about the way things work in a "free" country. Nowadays it's mostly used non-seriously, and many East Germans sometimes use it for themselves. However, some people oppose its usage completely, claiming that it keeps up the Mauer in den Köpfen.
