The philosophical school
that included Plotinus and Proclus who
attempted to reconcile and synthesize
Platonic thought with other philosophies
such as Stoicism and Aristotleanism.
The Neo-platonic view of the universe
was a heirarchy with God at the top, a number of
intermediate levels below and the world (our reality)
at the bottom. The further away you are from God,
the less real the world around you is (real in the
Platonic sense of being the abstract, ideal form.)
Often spelled without the hyphen, "neoplatonism".
