Michael Heizer was born in 1944, and his major works of art were created in the Avant-Garde period of environmental art (1966-1976). Due to a neurological disease, he hasn't been able to be as active as he was in his younger years. His most dedicated piece, "City", still has not been finished. Michael Heizer was once an abstract painter, but his works were underappreciated and often ignored by the art world. So he moved on to environmental art or "land art". He was inspired my his many archaelogist and geologist family members. He enjoys diving into the past and creating art inspired by ancient sculptures. Some of his most famous pieces are "Complex One" (only one part of a mile long sculpture entitled "City"), "Double Negative", and "Isolated Mass".
