Among the
Zulu people Mbaba Mwana Waresa is perhaps their most beloved
deity. First of all, she is credited with giving humanity
beer, as
Prometheus brought
fire to mortals. She is also the Goddess of Rain, which matters plenty when you practice
agriculture, and accounts for her being lady of the
Rainbow. The gift of beer ought to be enough to ensure eternal popularity for any deity. But she is also celebrated for her commitment to
romance and how the search for
true love led her to wed a simple
herdsman.
Zulu mythology says that Mbaba Mwana Waresa could not find a suitable husband among the other Gods. Instead she found a mortal, a herdsman named Thandiwe. who sang to her of his love of the land. His song moved her heart and so Goddess and Mortal were united in marriage.
Presumably they tossed down a few pints in celebration.
