Medical Intensive Care Unit
This is where the sickest of the sick adults are cared for in a hospital. There are lots of monitors, lots of ventilators, and lots of grieving families. Surprisingly, this is not where you see a lot of codes, owing to the high amount of technology and high nurse / patient ratio.
There is a lot of futile care going on. One week of observation here and you will want a living will or DNR orders set in stone and explained to your family. You would not want to suffer or be rescuscitated if your prognosis was grim to terminal, but your understandably muddled and hopeful family will likely opt for that.
Sucks, huh?
