A district in the south-western part of the
Peloponnese, surrounded by mountains from all sides except the south where it opens to the sea.
The principal city in Laconia was Sparta and the whole of Laconia constituted the polis of Sparta.
The term Laconic comes the name of the district, as the Spartans were famous for their short replies.
