Magnitude 2 star, the brighter of the two Guardians of the Pole located at the upper dipping end of the Little Dipper. In Plato's time, approximately 400 B.C., Kochab was the pole star.

The name "Kochab" is evidently a corruption of the Hebrew "kochav", which means "star".

It's definitely not from the Arabic, as that language doesn't have the soft "ch" sound used in the word.
