A type of garnet which is usually light brown with golden or orange overtones. Its name is from the Greek word for "inferior," because the stone rates lower on the Mohs hardness scale than does the hyacinth zircon which is the same color, not from any belief that the stone was worth less. (They are rare enough to be fairly valuable.) It's also called "cinnamon stone" when it is orange-toned.
