EURISKO is an artificial intelligence, invented by Douglas Lenat, in 1976. It works by having a series of heuristics, including how to modify the heuristics. Five years later, after accomplishing nothing, it was rewritten in RLL (Representation Language Language). EURISKO was applied to many fields, where it did very well. EURISKO went on to win the United States Traveller TCS national championship, two years in a row after which the officials announced that if EURISKO won again the competition would be removed. However, like any program, there were bugs, one such bug was a “mutant heuristic”, which simply found the most valuable discovery's, and listed it as their creator, it learned how to cheat.

The source code was never released and EURISKO was never reproduced, so its successes remain unconfirmed, except by its creator.
