A reformed Catholic religious order contemporary with the Cistercians founded by Bruno in 1084 near Grenoble, France. Carthusians live as hermits, meeting together only on Sundays and feast days for liturgy, a meal, and recreation. Most of a Carthusian's time is spent alone in his cell, praying, studying, or doing manual labor.
