Cell surface protein composed of 356 amino acids. Forms the cell surface receptor for endotoxin. Strongly expressed on monocytes and most tissue macrophages. Binding of endotoxin to CD14 leads to cell activation and the release of cytokines and up-regulation of adhesion molecules on the cell surface.
