Bipyridyl dinitro oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (BPDN) is a small organic molecule used in molecular electronics experiments. It is notable primarily for the hysteretic conductance switching it exhibits at high bias. There is some debate about the mechanism for this behavior. One early proposed mechanism involved the stabilization of a charge on the molecular orbitals by polaron formation, but recent experiments and theoretical work have generally shown that this is unlikely to be the case.
