Alexander Melville Bell

The father of Alexander Graham Bell (the inventor of the telephone). The senior Bell, like his son, was an educator of the Deaf, and he invented a phonetic alphabet called "Visible Speech," for transcribing the sounds of spoken language more precisely than normal orthography permits.
