These games took place at the same time as, and in the shadow of, the
World Exhibition which featured the Eiffel Towel as the main attraction.
The games were stretched out over 5 months because of this and was all in all
anonymous. The organization was heavily criticized for the lack of
adequate arenas. The swimming took place in the river Seine, which has a
strong current. Few
spectators or journalists made it to the events. Officials and athletes
often didn't know they were participating in the Olympics.
Events included golf, cricket and croquet. Women competed for the
first time in the Olympics, in golf and tennis.
