One of several groups of
Baptist churches in the
United states. This group held it's annual meeting in
St.Louis,
Missouri in June of 2002. During a keynote address by one Rev.Jerry Vines (a minister from
Jacksonville,
Florida), the subject of
comparitive religions was discussed. The following statement was greeted with wide applause:
"Islam was founded by Muhammad, a demon-possessed pedophile who had 12 wives — and his last one was a 9-year-old girl. And I will tell you Allah is not Jehovah either. Jehovah's not going to turn you into a terrorist that'll try to bomb people and take the lives of thousands and thousands of people."
In news reports the next day, leaders of the convention stood by the speaker's comments.
