Herbert was a friend of John Donne's, but their poetic style was quite different. All we have of Herbert's poetry is in the religious volume, The Temple, published posthumously. His secular work did not survive. Herbert is considered a "metaphysical poet."
Herbert was the fifth son out of nine children. Herbert went to school at Westminster School and at Trinity College in Cambridge. He was elected to Parliament in 1624. He also was ordained.
