Democratic Senator from South Dakota

Senator Johnson attended the University of South Dakota then went on to earn both a master's degree in political science and a law degree from the University of South Dakota. While an undergraduate he met Barbara Brooks of Sioux Falls who he later married. Johnson worked for the Michigan State Senate Appropriations Committee while Barbara completed her master's degree in social work. They had their first child, Brooks during this time

Tim began a private law practice in Vermillion in 1975, the same year their second child, Brendan, was born. Tim was elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives in 1978 and then reelected in 1980. Their third child Kelsey was born while he was serving in the South Dakota House. Tim ran for the state Senate and was elected in 1982 and 1984. After eight years in the state Senate, Johnson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986, where he served for five terms before being elected to the Senate on November 5, 1996.
