The
Ethenticator, manufactured by Ethentica, is a
PCMCIA card that replaces
passwords on a
laptop. Instead of typing in a password, the user would place their finger on the
sensor of the card. The
fingerprint is
scanned to see is that user has access to the laptop. Once a user is
authenticated, they would not have to worry about passwords for
e-mail,
websites, logging in, etc. The Ethenticator uses a new TactileSense pad for scanning the fingerprint.
Since I run several websites and I use 34 different passwords on my server alone, I installed a PCMCIA card reader and a prototype Ethenticator. It works great, and I don't have to worry about all those passwords anymore. I keep those passwords on a different system encrypted with PGP just in case the card dies.
