This is pretty cool stuff... literally. You get liquid oxygen (a.k.a. LOX
) when you cool oxygen down below -183.0 degrees Celcius (atmospheric pressure). This is pretty close to the boiling point of liquid nitrogen
. Usually liquid oxygen is obtained by fractional cryogenic distillation
It is very easy to light a grill with LOX, when you pour some of it on the charcoal briquettes. In fact, it is an easy way to vaporize your grill in a matter of minutes. Someone named George Goble has received the 1996 Ig Nobel Prize in chemistry for this concept.
