The source of many a large
noding project on E2, the non-profit Project Gutenberg transforms important
books and other
documents for which the
copyright has expired (or which have been explicitly put into public domain) into a
machine-readable format and makes them publically available on the
WWW.
The well-chosen name refers, of course, to Johann Gutenberg, inventor of the movable type, which was crucial for making books cheap and widespread, just like the work of Project Gutenberg is crucial for making them convenient to search and otherwise process digitally.
