The mathematical counterpart to literacy, numeracy is a basic understanding of mathematics. (contrast with innumeracy.) The term was coined by John Allen Paulos in his excellent book Innumeracy; it is also the title of a follow-up book of his consisting of about 50 short essays, each explaining in simple terms an important mathematical concept.
