The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous spacecraft, recently renamed to NEAR Shoemaker is the first spacecraft to orbit an asteroid. It has been taking many pictures (which are available online) and has accumulated a lot of data since it's first orbit on Feb 14th, 2000.

Character Etymology:

The radicals for movement and ax (at right), here used phonetically to express the idea of shortness or brevity although it may also lend an idea of to chop or make small (simular to how the phrase, "chop-chop," is used). Thus short movement, or more simply near.
