In the game of cricket, the position of mid-on is located between the bowler and mid-wicket, on the on side. Variations include:

  • silly mid-on - located dangerously close to the batter
  • short mid-on - located closer than usual to the batter
  • long on - located further than usual from the batter, perhaps on the boundary

"Square" and "fine" are never used to modify the position of mid-on. Rather the terms straight (ie, closer to the bowler) and wide (ie, closer to mid-wicket) are used.

Mid-on is one of the less glamourous fielding positions, and is often filled by a fast bowler. It is a defensive position this is often discarded in favour of another slip in the early stages of an innings when the bowling team is in an attacking position.
