In the game of cricket, the position of mid-wicket is located between the mid-on and square leg at around a 45 degree angle from the batter on the on side. Variations include:

  • short mid-wicket - located closer than usual to the batter
  • deep mid-wicket - located further than usual from the batter, perhaps on the boundary

As mid-wicket moves towards square leg it is described as being "squarer", and as it moves towards mid-on it is described as "straighter".

Mid-wicket is roughly analogous to cover, except that it is on the on side. It is usually a little less busy than cover, though it is more likely to receive catches from a mis-hit on-drive or pull.
