(Latin: "lord and god")
Formal mode of address used when speaking to the Roman emperor. The title was first used by Domitian (emperor 81-96), but did not enter common usage until Diocletian (emperor 284-305).
With the adoption of Christianity as state religion of Rome, the phrase naturally fell into disuse.
