central state and city in México, known for its silver mining.

Bordered on the south by Jalisco and Aguascalientes, on the east by San Luis Potosi, on the west by Durango and on the north by Coahuila. Some of its mines date back to the mid 1500s. Population (1980) = 1,136,830, (1990) = 1,276,323, (2000 estimate) = 1.351 million estimate) .

City

Capital of Zacatecas state and founded in 1548. Population (1990) = 100,051, (2000 estimate) = 114,000
