WorldForge is an open source, online role-playing game (or MMORPG). It plans to allow compatibility between a variety of servers and clients using a common protocol. The main world being developed is Dural, a fantasy world focused on balanced role-playing rather than hack and slash play, although each server is totally customizable. The project started in late 1998 and is partway into its development cycle, with room for more interested volunteers to help complete it.
