Author of some of the most readable books on UNIX programming I've ever seen. Concise, interesting, readable, good code, well laid out. Unfortunately Mr. Stevens is no longer with us. He shuffled off this mortal coil on September 1st, 1999. His home page at http://www.kohala.com/start/ is still maintained, and has some interesting info about him, as well as things related to his books.

In 2000, Stevens was posthumously awarded the USENIX lifetime achievement award. It was accepted by his wife, children and sister. After the announcement was received with a spontaneous standing ovation; "It blew my mind," says his sister, Claire Stevens. "I knew he wrote those books, but it never made a dent. I had absolutely no idea that all these people knew and were touched by him."
