I noticed this day was missing from the everything day logs and since it is my birthday. I went ahead and added it. I got a special present from my girlfriend. But, We broke up a couple days later.

September 1, 1999 was the day that W. Richard Stevens died.

He was a Unix guru responsible for lucid and incredibly influential books, including TCP/IP Illustrated and Advanced Unix Programming.

I learned about his life, and his death on news for nerds, aka slashdot. It was also the ugliest, meanest, most horrible discussion I can ever recall on slashdot, and was directly responsible for the moderation system they now employ.
