One of the more unusual spin-offs in television history, Trapper John, M.D. was a derivative of M*A*S*H which featured Dr. "Trapper" John McIntyre 28 years removed from the Korean war and the 4077. Age has mellowed McIntyre, and he is no longer the maverick he was in his younger days. He now works as the chief of surgery at San Francisco Memorial Hospital and manages a staff of doctors with diverse backgrounds and personalities with the common goal of saving lives. The series was on the air from 1979-1986.

The unusual thing about the spin-off (the seventies was a decade which featured numerous spinoffs) was that it was a drama, whereas the original was, of course, a comedy. I didn't know it was a spinoff until the early nineties when one of my boys told me about it.
