Timothy Hunter is the protagonist of
The Books of Magic, a
comic book series created by
Neil Gaiman and published by
Vertigo (
DC Comics).
When the series begins, we meet Tim, an average (if sort of lonely) 12-year-old British boy who lives with his widower father. Why do we care about Tim? Because it turns out that he might be the most powerful
sorcerer ever. He is accosted by a group of powerful men, the
Trenchcoat Brigade (
Phantom Stranger,
John Constantine,
Mr. E, and
Dr. Occult) who are trying to gauge his potential - and determine how dangerous he is.
Surviving the initial ordeal, Tim falls deeper into the world of
magic, and this is where the series really starts to take off. Tim is an excellent character, and believable: he reacts to the most outlandish situations with equal parts depressed skepticism and wide-eyed awe. His huge aviator glasses, gangly frame and mousy brown hair make him an unlikely hero.
Throughout the series, not only does he meet
Death, visit
Hell and fight a
Manticore, he also discovers some shocking news about his parentage (he might be the son of
Faerie royalty). All this while trying to maintain a normal life as a young boy!
His story continues in the miniseries
The Names of Magic, which starts 24 hours after The Books of Magic ends. Tim is chased by Faeries and two secret magic organizations who want to harm him. After this is
Hunter: The Age of Magic, where Tim is 17 and training in magic at the White School. He is older and stronger than he was at the beginning, but still very confused about his place in the world.
