Movie made by Charlie Chaplin
in 1940. A jab at Hitler
, and fascism
in general. Chaplin plays both the Hitler character and a Jewish barber
in the ghetto
. An interesting movie, as it is one of the few that deal with Hitler's oppression
before the discovery (to the entire world) of the true horrors of the final solution
; the concentration
camp looks just like a normal prison
, for instance, and the movie ends up on a note that appears sadly innocent
to us viewers who know what eventually happened in the 1940s.
Although it wasn't very popular when it came out, The Great Dictator is seen today as one of Chaplin's greatest works.
