This statement could truthfully be made by Wilmer McLean. It was on his farm that the first major battle of the American Civil War, The Battle of Bull Run was fought. Eventually, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant in the parlor of his home at Appomattox, to which he had moved with his family to protect them from the war.
