In England, it is constantly the wettest March, the coldest Tuesday or the most miserable May since records began.

It is a phrase which is tacked onto the end of every statistic relating to our great national joke, to denote just quite how bad it is, in case you don’t have a window to look out, to see for yourself.
But, it gives us something to moan about and we like that.

An example quote from the Met Office site (www.meto.govt.uk/):

This has been the wettest April in England and Wales since records began in 1766

The British Met Office also has the oldest temperature records in the world, dating from 1659. So technically the international perception of the English a nation obsessed with the weather, is completely accurate.
