Hard-boiled military man created for DC Comics' "Our Army at War" comic book in 1959 by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. Sgt. Frank Rock was the commander of a platoon called Easy Company, which included characters like Wildman, Bulldozer, Ice Cream Soldier, Little Sure Shot, and others. The series owed more to movies than it did to World War II research--one of the characters, Jackie Jackson, was black, which meant that Easy Company was the only integrated platoon in the war. The Sarge eventually became so popular that the comic book was retitled simply "Sgt. Rock". It lasted until the summer of 1988--longer than any other war comic.
